We live in a world that subscribes to the philosophy of “want it now with very little effort.”  This is evident in so many ways – especially food — and consequently, this mindset has created a society of overweight and unhealthy individuals – and we’re not just referring to the adult population here.  Childhood obesity is on the rise and as a result of this trend, diseases that not that long ago didn’t present themselves until adulthood, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type II diabetes are now being diagnosed in children.

Fast food restaurants are on every corner in just about every town and city.  You could probably choose a different one for every night of the week.  Everyone enjoys a fast food meal once in a while but a steady diet of calorie-laden selections with little or no nutritional value will definitely put you on the path to unhealthyville sooner than later.

There’s a lot of truth to the old adage, “you are what you eat.”  A continuous diet of fast food, processed food and harmful additives will only work against you over time.  As a result of lifestyle choices, manufacturers of prescription drugs and weight loss products are getting richer and richer.  There isn’t a day that goes by when you don’t hear or read about a new drug or concoction that will help you lose weight or tone up with hardly any effort on your part.

The grim reality is that many individuals would rather spend their hard-earned money at the drug store as opposed to the grocery store.  It’s much quicker to take a pill and endure whatever side affects come along with it rather than take the time and effort to prepare a nutritious meal or participate in some form of exercise.

Cooking homemade meals for yourself and your family doesn’t mean hours slaving over a hot stove after you’ve already put in an eight-hour workday.  It does require some planning and preparation but the benefits derived from it far outweigh the extra time involved.
